A short story by

(read on for a sample)

“You came highly recommended,” the tall blonde began after she took a seat across from me.

“I’ve gotten lucky,” I said.

She shook her head. “I’ve checked your references. Most were thankful, appreciative. Some wouldn’t shut up about you.”

“I tend to have that effect on people.”

“You’ve also helped a lot of important people.”

“I treat all my clients the same,” I said to her. “Just as I...” But I stopped right there.

The tall blonde leaned forward a little, her thighs flexing under her miniskirt, her bosom shifting but not yet appearing at the top of her blouse. “Just as you want to be treated the same?”

“Well, yes. Wouldn’t you?”

The blonde tried wrapping her pretty head around my “predicament,” but had a helluva time of it. Hard to picture oneself in my shoes, really. That is, if I wore shoes. I suspected the only form of discrimination the pretty blond had ever faced was the occasional dumb blonde jokes.

“Yes,” she finally said. “I would want to be treated normal. But what is normal, if you think about it?”

“I would say normal is anything that’s not me.”

She was about to smile but wasn’t sure if it was politically correct to do so. Or if she would be hurting my feelings. Trust me, there was little she could do or say to hurt me anymore than I’d already been hurt. Yeah, I know. Poor me. Wah, wah.

“It’s okay,” I said. “You can laugh about it.”

“But I don’t want to laugh, or even joke about it.”

“But surely you have questions.”

“Nope, I’m just here to hire you. And, well...”

“Well, what?”

“Maybe see if you want to get a drink later?”

“Drinks are messy affairs with me. You know, not having a stomach and all. Or an esophagus. Or a tongue. Or any skin to contain the drink.”

“I know,” she said. “I’ve read your story. Who hasn’t? Plus, I have eyes. I can see.”

She was right, of course. I might work as a private eye... but I lead a second, double life as an internet sensation. There are sites, blogs, Twitter accounts, Facebook Fan Pages, Instagram accounts, eBay and Etsy stores, all devoted to yours truly. I am a popular meme, too... many of which have gone viral. I am an artist favorite too. Nearly every day a new picture or painting is emailed or snail mailed to my office. Hell, on the wall behind my prospective client was a painting of me holding a beer at a Mardi Gras celebration. I was even sporting colorful beads. No, I had never been to Mardi Gras, but that didn’t stop the paintings and drawings, especially drawings from little kids. For some reason, I’m their hero. Some even call me a superhero.

Skeleton Jim, they call me.

I looked at the woman in front of me.
